For our holiday in Santorini we started with a few days in the bustling and most popular village of Oia in the North of the island, before moving down to the quieter Southern part of the caldera for a chilled stay at Ambeli Sunset Villas.

Location
Ambeli is located in the Southern part of Santorini along the edge of the famous caldera. It enjoys absolutely stunning views into the caldera, with an unrivalled level of privacy.
It is quite easy to find, located just off the road, with a good amount of parking in front of the property. If you have hired a car (which I would absolutely recommend in Santorini!), Ambeli makes an excellent base from which to explore the sometimes overlooked delights of the Southern part of the island.
Just up the road is a supermarket and bakery, and the villages of Akrotiri, Megalochori, and Emporio are close by. Megalochori is stunning, and we enjoyed a lovely wine tasting there at Gavalas winery, followed by a delicious meal in the village. You can book a tour of Gavalas winery here.

Other nearby things to do in Santorini which are within easy access by car from Ambeli include the Black Beach, Red Beach, Perissa Beach, and the Akrotiri Archeological Site.

Check in
Andra who works on reception here was incredibly welcoming and helpful. She showed us the room and offered to help with our luggage, before talking us through some of her recommendations of things to see and do in Santorini’s Southern half.
She also gave us a contact number for the main reception in case we needed anything. She checked with us later on via WhatsApp that everything was okay and offered help if we needed to book any taxis, restaurants or tours. We felt that Andra was there to help whenever we needed, but gave us privacy and space to relax.
Being a small complex of only four villas, you really do feel personally welcomed and looked after here. This personal touch came in very handy when we needed help to book the renowned To Psoraki restaurant at Vlychada Harbour (see our dining recommendations here). As they had no website booking option, Andra kindly called them and made the arrangements for us.
Facilities
There are two kinds of accommodation available :
Santorini Caldera View Suites With Outdoor Hot Tub – these are the two first floor suites with a kitchen, lounge, separate bedroom, plus a balcony with table and chairs, hot tub, and an egg chair.
Santorini Villas With Private Heated Pool And Caldera View – Ground floor villas with two bedrooms and a private heated pool as part of an outdoor patio area.
All rooms have flatscreen TV, and a fridge, as well as a capsule coffee making machine. Free bottled water is provided, and can be freely replenished on request.
If you are staying in one of the villas with a private pool, it should be noted that your pool will be visible to the guests on the two balconies above.
The suites and villas all overlook the caldera and offer spectacular views facing the famous Santorini sunset in the evening.
The suite
The interior of the suite was beautifully clean. Done in the typical Santorini Cave House fashion, the style is clean and minimal. See our video below for a full walk through of the suite and balcony :

The twinkling lights of the two main villages Oia and Fira can be see in the distance at night, and during the day the white houses appear to be nestled on the clifftops like snow atop a mountain.
From our suite we marvelled at the views across the volcanic cliffs into the sea, with a small traditional Greek church in the near distance being the icing on the cake. Down to our right were bright green vine leaves of plants growing the Assyrtiko grape, from which fine white wines are made locally.
Breakfast
The board at Ambeli Sunset Villas is on a bed and breakfast basis. Breakfast is brought to your room at any reasonable time of your choosing, ready to enjoy at the outdoor table of your balcony or patio. Just speak to the staff the night before to arrange.
Each day we were brought a tray with bread, pastries, toasted sandwiches and cooked eggs. To accompany were honey, jams, and yogurt, with a jar of orange juice each. All very tasty indeed, and we assumed that the bread and pastries had come from the bakery just up the road each day.
Having the breakfast delivered to the room and relaxing on the balcony enjoying the epic views while we ate and had coffee was a real treat.
Final thoughts
As a peaceful retreat on this beautiful island away from the daily crowds in Oia and Fira, Ambeli is a perfect option for your Santorini accommodation. The views of the natural volcanic formations of the famous Santorini caldera are truly spectacular, and Ambeli showcases these perfectly.
